Open-plan
location The apartment is located in Kypseli, in a pre-war three-storey building from the 1930s. The design strategy is based on an open-plan logic as a tool for spatial and social organization: unifying entrance, corridor, living and dining areas enables fluid visual and functional flows, while preserving and highlighting the building’s historic architectural qualities (marble, timber, parquet) so that material richness of the past coexists with contemporary functionality.
The kitchen as entry and corridor The central element of the proposal is the “Large Kitchen” — a gestural, elongated composition that begins at the entrance and functions as a linear extension of the corridor, running through the main space and embracing the living and dining areas. This perimeter, longitudinal piece both organizes movement and acts as a welcoming threshold: built-in storage, library shelving, integrated lighting and sliding mechanisms form a continuous sequence that culminates in the kitchen itself.
Material and stylistic strategy The intervention respects and elevates the building’s original materials: existing parquet and marble elements are retained and showcased where in good condition, while elements requiring intervention are carefully restored and reintroduced. Work surfaces are stainless steel (Inox) for durability, hygiene and a clean, unified aesthetic. Cabinetry is ash wood (drino), painted in white / light tones to create discreet contrasts that highlight the original parquet and other architectural elements. Functional layout - 4 m preparation countertop: a principal work surface serving all food-preparation needs, integrating the sink. - Island: cooking hob with a stainless-steel extractor hood, organizing the main culinary functions. - Perimeter furniture: beginning at the entrance, this continuous unit contains built-in cupboards and drawers, housing for integrated appliances (fridge, oven, microwave, washer), lighting and bookshelf space — assembling reception and storage functions for the whole apartment.
Architectural outcome This kitchen gesture transforms the kitchen from a purely functional zone into an organizing and social element: as an extension of the corridor it becomes the apartment’s spine — storing, structuring and welcoming — while simultaneously highlighting the historic materials and character of the building, producing a coherent, flexible and inviting open-plan interior.
